Watch any beginner's helmet-cam cycling video and you'll see the same two failures: half the frame is sky, or half the frame is stem and front tyre. The camera was fine. The mount was the problem.
Your head angle isn't constant
On a road bike, your head pitch changes dramatically with position:
- On the hoods, your face points mostly forward.
- In the drops, your head tilts down and your eyes rotate up to compensate.
- In an aero tuck, your helmet can be pitched 20–30° below horizontal.
- Climbing out of the saddle, everything rotates back up again.
A fixed helmet mount is calibrated for exactly one of these. Ride in any other position and your horizon drifts out of frame. This is physics, not user error — and it's why so many riders give up on helmet POV and bolt the camera to the bars instead (where it vibrates and misses every head-check and glance).
The fix: set the angle for the position you ride

- Get on the bike in your normal riding position — be honest; if you spend 80% of a ride on the hoods, use that.
- Open the camera's phone app with live preview.
- Tilt the cradle until the horizon sits roughly one-third from the top of frame.
- Ride.
Thirty seconds of setup, and your footage stops looking like a security camera and starts looking like cinema.
Small cameras make helmet POV viable again
The old argument against helmet mounts was weight — a full-size action camera up top wobbles and strains your neck on long rides. A DJI Osmo Nano or GO 3S body is light enough that, combined with a TPU mount weighing next to nothing, you genuinely forget it's there. The helmet still passes through a café door check without comment, and the quick-release clip means the camera comes off in one second when you stop.
